I just had to share this weird twist to my determination to see the movie Somewhere in Time again before I go back to the island for my tour of the Grand Hotel. As I said in my last post on Saturday “I’m Going to the Island” my plan was to get the movie and watch it that night.
And my plan was going better than planned when I found the best price for the movie was at a shop on Main Street called Baxter’s, but what I didn’t realize that it was THE shop that was in the movie! As shown in my little collage, that’s Richard going into Baxter’s Coin Shop when he was looking for money dated no later than 1912. And Baxter’s Somewhere in Time Shop is where I bought my movie and the book “The Somewhere in Time Story!”
I also got the perfect t-shirt with an emblem that has the main things I love about the island:
All right then, I’m all set! Saturday night I watched the director’s clips and commentary because I’d never seen that before. Loved it! After that, I was too tired to watch the movie and give it the full attention it deserves.
So last night (Sunday) was going to be the night! I popped the DVD in my laptop and after I hit “play” the drive made this screeching noise that went on and off, but no way was I going to watch my movie with that distraction. I tried all the tech tricks I knew of which basically consisted of taking out and reinserting the disk and restarting the computer before I resorted to calling Lenovo to see what their tech had to say. He could hear the noise over the phone and said it sounded like the fan or drive was going bad.
That was bad enough, because at the very least it’s screwing with my plans to watch the movie, but I certainly didn’t relish having to deal with computer repairs at this point in time. But here’s where I told myself to be grateful that last year I had bought their ridiculously expensive 4 year extended warranty that promised me next business day onsite service no matter where I traveled in the U.S.
But even though I had previously used that warranty, the tech guy could not find a record that I had it now, so I had to wait until Monday to get with the warranty department to get that “exception” straightened out. But Monday (today) is when I’m going back to the island with Ken & Sandy for our Mackinac Island Carriage Tour, Wings of Mackinac and Fort Mackinac tours. They drove all the way from Oscoda and today is just the day that’s meant for that…
But, wait, he had even better news. I asked if it was just a matter of replacing that drive, if there was a service center nearby where I could take it and if that would be quicker than waiting for an onsite guy to come, which now wouldn’t be until Tuesday or Wednesday. He plugs in the zip code for my temporary home in St. Ignace, and informs me there is no service center within 100 miles of me.
OK, then please tell me that doesn’t mean that if there’s no service center nearby that also means there’s no onsite tech guy to send out to my site either? His helpful response was that may or may not be the case, but I’d have to call back tomorrow to talk to the warranty department before anything else could be done tech-wise.
So between tours and carriage rides, voice mails and messages, I was finally able to talk to a warranty guy who said he’d found that I do indeed have the warranty, but now tech had to talk to me again to get more info on the problem and I needed to be at the laptop to do that.
“That’s great, dude, keep switching me back and forth between departments, but I’m on an island at the moment and I have to take a ferry to get home, and that won’t be until after 5:00, so I guess this means I have to start this whole process again tomorrow, which means I can’t expect service until Wednesday at the earliest, is that correct?”
“Yes ma’am, I’m afraid so.”
“And this is because your system didn’t have me registered for the warranty I paid for and used over a year ago, and you also had my serial number showing invalid, and that was your mistake also, is that correct?”
“Yes ma’am, I’m afraid so.”
“Are you freakin’ kidding me, dude?”
“No ma’am, I’m afraid not.”
Ah, well, let’s not get into what I was thinking about how afraid he would be if I had my hands around his little whiney throat right about then…
But here’s the weird twist…
I got home at about 10:00 tonight and called Lenovo to start going through the techy steps necessary to get tech service out to my onsite site. Because naturally the guy I’m talking to now doesn’t have the notes from the two guys I had talked to earlier today, despite my giving him the case number they gave me, I had to go through the whole story again. As I’m finishing up with the explanation and we’re finally going to start the process, I’m inserting the DVD into the drive again waiting for the noise to come on to play it full blast in his ears so he can get an idea of how irritated I am.
But….nothing, nada, no noise, just a nice movie starting to play just like it should! Huh? I’ve heard of symptoms disappearing as soon as you walk in the doctor’s office, or car noises that won’t recreate when you’re at the mechanic, but I told this tech guy that he must be an absolute wizard – just calling him fixed it up!
He really was pretty cool because he still suggested that he send me a replacement DVD drive because it may be working intermittently now but it sounds like it may be getting ready to fail permanently. That’s something he said I’ll be able to easily replace myself and I’ll have it before I leave Straits on the 26th, so that was good news.
But now again, I’m too tired now to watch the movie. I’ve been going over the pictures and videos Sandy and I took today and I still need to post pictures of my first day biking around the island on Saturday – which was absolutely one of the most delightful days I’ve ever had in my life….
So I’ll leave it at that for now and plan on catching up more tomorrow about my love affair with magical Mackinac Island. I really am crazy about this place!
Thanks to my Facebook and other friends for sharing this fun time with me – it’s been cool to relish the excitement with others who feel the same way & some who don’t get it at all but are just happy for me. And now I’m even talking TO the Grand Hotel on their fan page. Life in MI is basically very good! 🙂
