I knew the main attraction for me while staying at Straits State Park was going to be the Grand Hotel. I held out for as long as I could because I wanted to be totally immersed in the experience, so I made sure I had toured Mackinac Island by foot, bike and carriage before venturing into the feature attraction. I have so many pictures and so much to write about that experience, but for now time only permits me to show what the luncheon is like at the Grand Hotel – something everyone should treat themselves to at least once in a lifetime!
Being seated for my Grand Hotel Luncheon Buffet – ain’t it grand??? The people here are all so fantastic and friendly.
Long view of the dining room. The view from here is looking out onto the porch which overlooks the lake – incredible!
It’s impossible to capture how long the buffet is and be able to see it all. This is the start with fruit and salad and it goes all the way to that last light at the end with desserts. You could work up an appetite just making your way down the line!
Even things that seemed so simple were still elegant and unique. I loved these – cantelope with jello on top. Never seen anything like it but so yummy. The stuffed eggs were also among my favorite.
Basic, simple veggies but amazing taste – maybe the silver servers help? 🙂
I don’t eat seafood, but everyone else was oohing and aahing over the selection…
My first plate… really, all I could eat and still leave room for dessert.
Desserts were even better than they looked – a real trick and treat – and the selection was truly decadent!
Dessert and coffee – perfect top-off of this amazing meal! I chatted with these two wonderful ladies throughout lunch and their company made it even more enjoyable.
After lunch, I went on the tour of the West Bluff Victorian Homes next to the hotel and after that, I figured I had walked off enough of luncheon to come back to the hotel for their signature dessert…
Grand Hotel is famous for their Pecan Balls – I had one as my second dessert a couple of hours after the Grand Luncheon. It’s vanilla ice cream rolled in pecans sitting on a dark chocolate sauce – incredibly and sinfully good!
This entire day was like a dream come true for me – and in fact it was. I had dreamed of the Grand Hotel ever since seeing it in one of my very favorite movies, Somewhere in Time. So this day was the culmination of 31 years of fantasies of the Grand Hotel and I have a lot more to write about it and a lot more pictures to share, so more to come on Malia’s Miles website when time permits.
I do have some pictures of the hotel posted on my public Facebook album if you’d like to share the fantasy so far…
