Texas
became my adopted state when I moved from New Orleans to Austin
in 1971. I hadn't even begun to explore this huge state when
I started fulltiming in 2001 and headed off to even more unknown
territories. |
|
|
I've
been back several times since then, but I'm ashamed to say it's
been the same ole' story - you take your home turf for granted and
forget to even get your camera out. Last time I was there, I was
consumed with family business and other necessities, so I didn't
get to work on my Texas pages. I'm committed to changing that next
time I get back there, but for now I wanted to let you know about
a good repair service I used last time I was there in the sweltering
heat.

Quickly,
I'll just give a little preview here of my most important favorite
things about Austin - a place to stay and Mexican food:
|
|
RV
Park:
Pecan Grove RV Park on Barton Springs Road. I always feel
right at home here whenever I'm back in my hometown. I've seen remarks
in forums that it's an old funky place with mostly fulltime residents.
That may be true from their perception, but it's the good kind of
old & funky with a nice feel to it, and every resident I've
ever met there were really good folks. The park itself really is
in the midst of an old pecan tree grove - nice and shady - and you
couldn't ask for a more convenient spot. Close to downtown for exploring
the state capitol, 6th Street, beautiful Zilker Park, and my favorite
restaurant is within walking distance. Sometimes it's tough getting
a monthly spot, but they do have pull-throughs set aside for overnighters.

Mexican
Food:
Chuy's on Barton Springs. It's hard to pick a favorite
Tex-Mex place in Austin because so many are really good, but
I always come back there for my favorite salsa and chili rellenos
- and their homemade flour tortillas are the best I've ever
had anywhere. Watch out, though, because their creamy jalapeno
dip/dressing is addictive! Substitute their green chili rice
for the regular kind and you won't be sorry. There's almost
always a wait to sit at a table, but they serve free chips and
salsa and have a bar area to sip their delicious margaritas. |

Links:
RVing friends Jim and Chris have some shots of Austin
with both places above on their website Odie's
Roadies. I really enjoy reading their blog and their computer
savvy site GeeksOnTour.com.
