AUSTIN,
TEXAS | |
| Live
Music Capital of the World - Whether
you agree with this grand designation or not, it became an official slogan of
the City of Austin in 1991 after research revealed that we had more live music
venues per capita than Nashville, New York City, and other music hot spots. Click

Joplin got her start in Austin singing for beer at Threadgills,
the first bar in the county to get a liquor license when the former bootlegger
was able to go legit. For over 75 years now, they've served that good ole' Southern
home cooked comfort food we all crave when we aren't worrying about our waistlines.
The current owner, Eddie Wilson, started one of Austin's most famous music venues,
Armadillo
World Headquarters. To relive that golden age and more of Austin's eclectic
history, check out the museums (in two locations) while in Austin.

Life in Austin: |
| One
of the jewels in Austin's crown is Zilker
Park and the hike & bike trail that winds around Lady
Bird Lake, where you can canoe or kayak.
It's one of the reasons I prefer to stay at Pecan
Grove RV Park, since it's within walking distance to this great park. The
trails are wide and well maintained, with great places to stop and enjoy the views
or feed the ducks, as my granddaughter, Anna, and I are doing here in 2008. | | | | Another
famous Austin tradition is taking your kid's picture in the bluebonnet fields
that flourish all around Austin in the spring. Here's my sweet granddaughter proudly
carrying on the family tradition.

Favorite Things About Austin: |
| Mexican
Food: Chuy's on
Barton Springs. It's hard to pick a favorite Tex-Mex place in Austin because so
many are really good, but I always come back there for my favorite salsa and chili
rellenos - and their homemade flour tortillas are the best I've ever had anywhere.
Watch out, though, because their creamy jalapeno dip/dressing is addictive! Substitute
their green chili rice for the regular kind and you won't be sorry. There's almost
always a wait to sit at a table, but they serve free chips and salsa and have
a bar area to sip their delicious margaritas.

2 cents: One
of my goals when I started RVing was to explore lots of places around the country
to decide where I'd want to settle down again once my RVing days were over. Having
traveled for over 7 years now, I don't honestly know if I'd settle anywhere else.
My main objection is that the summers are so swelteringly hot, but (besides my
kids and grandkids) there are enough attractions here to make this a really desirable
hometown, and definitely a great place to visit!
