Thunderbird
Stables was close by the
campground I stayed at during my visit to Lake Thunderbird State
Park. I hadn't been on a horse in over 20 years, but it sounded
like fun and I'm glad I listened to that little voice in my head
that told me so. Owners Bobby & Cindy Steveson have run this
operation for 22 years, so I felt like I was in good hands when
I told Cindy I was at least a notch below "inexperienced"
when she asked my level of competence.

She
put me on a sweet, gentle guy named Dakota. I think he sensed I
didn't know what I was doing, but he didn't hold it against me.

Their
rides are generally self-guided and the horses know the trail real
well, but I felt much better when a very nice couple from Norman,
Joe & Allisha Aguayo, offered to let me tag along with them.

Allisha
took this photo of me and Joe at a rest stop. They told me they
like to come here because it's much easier than owning your own
horse and all the work that comes with it.

It
was a nice, easy-going ride down the shaded trail. We saw a flock
of wild turkeys and a few deer, but this is the only shot that came
out as I was bouncing along on Dakota. I highly recommend you take
advantage of this fun activity when you're at either of their state
park locations. The price for an hour ride when I was there in August,
2006 was $17.00. Tell Cindy I said hi and that next time I'll wear
socks & tennis shoes or boots!
