RiverCamp USA

My First Ever Kayak Trip!
I really enjoyed my stay at RiverCamp USA and one of the greatest attractions here, in my opinion, is the New River running alongside the campground.
This is where we put in for the downriver ride. The campground shuttles you by van 4 miles upriver and helps you get in. This day was sunny and beautiful and the water was so clear. However, the summer drought meant the water was really low. I think that was somewhat of a benefit on my first ever kayak trip; I was a little nervous about tipping over and it was comforting to know I could stand up anywhere along the way.
And Ruthanne and Frank (camp hosts) were great teachers and showed me how to paddle and how to read the water for the best routes to steer around the rocks, but advised to just relax and go with the flow.
We had company along the way with these beautiful mallards. But the animal highlight of the trip for me was seeing one of my favorite flying creatures - a red tailed hawk!
Sometimes the water was as smooth as glass...
...other times a bit more rowdy, but never scary. And the just-turning-yellow trees framed it just perfectly.
About 2 hours later, we arrived back at the campground, where I passed my motorhome on the way. Roger (Ruthanne's hubby), met us and helped me out. I got a kick out of it when he said he stuck around and watched us for a while after he let us in before heading back to the campground because I sounded nervous. It was way too enjoyable to be nervous after just the first few minutes. I definitely recommend making this run while you're staying here.
See Malia's RV for more pics of the trip - this day was a lifesaver for my spirits when my computer crashed the day before!
